Polyglutamic acid(PGA), is an amino polymer formed by the polymerization of D-glutamic acid and L-glutamic acid by γ-glutamyl bond. The general molecular weight is 10- 2000 kDa. In 1943 Ivanovics first discovered γ-PGA, and since 1942 Bovarnick found that γ-PGA as a fermentation product can be freely secreted into Bacillus subtilis growth medium, it was found that a variety of Bacillus can be in the cell PGA.
Because the polymer has free a-carboxyl group, it has high hydration power. when γ-PGA was applied to the skin, it would increase the amount of both pyrrolidonecarboxylic acid and lactic acid as the main components of Natural Moisture Factor (NMF). That is, γ-PGA can bring out the moisture-holding ability from the inside of the skin.
