What is 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone(DHA) ?

Dihydroxyacetone or 1,3-dihydroxyacetone, abbreviated as DHA, is a polyhydroxy ketose. It is the simplest ketose. It has a white powdery crystal appearance and is easily soluble in water. An organic solvent such as ethanol, diethyl ether or acetone having a melting point of 75-80 ° C and a water solubility of >250 g/L (20 ° C), having a sweet taste and being stable at a pH of 6.0.

Use

Dihydroxyacetone is mainly used as a raw material for cosmetics, especially as a sunscreen. It has a special effect, prevents excessive evaporation of skin moisture, and acts as a moisturizing, sunscreen and ultraviolet radiation. In addition, the ketone functional group in DHA reacts with the amino acid and amino groups of skin keratin to form a brown polymer, which produces an artificial brown color on the skin, so it can also be used as a mimicking agent for the sun-skinning complex. Long-term exposure to sunlight results in the same brown or tan skin that makes it look beautiful.
