Ecdysone is the major steroid hormone of the ecdysone 20-hydroxyecdysone, which is secreted by the anterior thymus. Insect ecdysone (ecdysone and its homologs) is often referred to as ecdysone. The ecdysteroids act as ecdysone for arthropods, but they also occur in other related doors, which can play different roles. In Drosophila melanogaster, an increase in the concentration of ecdysone induces expression of a gene encoding a protein required for larvae, and it causes chromosome ejection (a site of high expression) to form in a multiline chromosome. Ecdysteroids are also found in many plants, primarily as protective agents (toxins or antifeedants) against herbivores. These plant carcasses are said to have medicinal properties.

Cyanotis Arachnoidea C. B. Clarke is a plant which is found in southern China, such as in Sichuan Province. The extract of this plant is used in cosmetic products, hypoglycemic product, food supplement for sports, culture of shrimp, crab and silkworm. This plant is rich in ecdysteroids.

Properties
In different purity, the product is light yellow to white crystalline powder, odorless, with hygroscopicity, the color of product will be changed gradually under strong light or heat.
Effects
1. Hypoglycemic effects. It is able to suppress hepatic glucose formation and thus lower blood sugar levels.
2. Protein synthesis. It is able to induce protein synthesis in animal organs such as the liver or skeletal muscle by increased mRNA translation efficiency.
3. Skin repair and growth. It is able to promote keratinocyte differentiation and accelerate small wounds and burns when externally applied.
Application
1. Gene switches - ecdysone receptor-controlled transgenes for controlled gene expression in scientific research, agriculture, andmedicine. The last category includes potential use in gene therapy.
2. Insecticides - the development of selective insect growth regulators for use as environmentally benign insecticides. Although dibenzoylhydrazine compounds are not ecdysteroids, many are agonists of lepidopteran ecdysone receptors and are used ascaterpillar-selective larvicides.
